A tough, light and shifty two days took place in the waters of Okahu Bay at the Royal Akarana Yacht Club over the 30th/31st March. Despite the winds best efforts and some lengthy delays in the mornings before racing, the race committee team managed to pump through 79 races across two days! The 2021 edition of the G.J. Gardner Open Team Sailing National Championships was arguably the best open regatta yet. The ten competing teams got through two full round robins in two days, before the final series was unfortunately blown off by winds well in excess of 30 knots on the third and final day. Racing postponed initially, then boats went afloat only to find the wind hadn’t filled in, so back ashore after 2 hours of waiting. Soon after arriving on shore the breeze came in, with the first race of RR1 starting just after midday. Racing continued all afternoon, with all 45 races of RR1 completed before dark.
