420 college Team sailing ‘Top of the South’ regional regatta at QCYC – Picton – 30 March to 1 April A record number of college sailing teams competed in Picton Harbour last Thursday to Saturday. 14 teams from as far as Christchurch and Mt Aspiring competed in the Top of the South regionals and overall champion. Great sailing again for the final day at Picton, where 54 races were held, to complete two round robins in the gold fleet and one for the silver fleet. Marlborough Boys won the event ahead of Queen Charlotte College, with Nayland College top of the silver fleet. Marlborough won the Top of the South trophy which goes to the winner of the most races between Nelson and Marlborough teams.

Kristin has won the Auckland Cup, ahead of Westlake Boys, Kings’ and Grammar. Nearly 100 races held in light winds at KYC. Well done to Paul Wotton and his Kohi team, plus the umpires and team helpers.

Day 2 – Another great day on the water at Picton Again we waited for the breeze to fill in and then enjoyed beautiful team sailing conditions all afternoon, with the occasional wind shadow effects as the ferry berthed just at the top of our course on Picton Harbour. We completed round robin one and the first 9 races of Gold and Silver fleets. Queen Charlotte College came out on top of the 14 team round robin after winning over the Marlborough Boys College with Mount Aspiring

After a slow start – a wait until 1pm yesterday before a beautiful gentle breeze came in all afternoon on Picton Harbour – managed to compete 47 races, coming off the water around 6pm. Marlborough Boys and Queen Charlotte College have won their races so far but there are plenty more races before the end of the round robin. Mt Aspiring and Motueka High School are also doing well but anything can happen as we continue the racing before dividing into gold and silver fleets. A

A few hours lost in the morning due to a lack of wind, a decision was been made to discard all races done in round robin 2. Instead top 4 teams had a round racing each other. Then the bottom 5 teams raced each other.

One full round robin completed, followed by 2 split round robins – top 5, bottom 4. Kerikeri lead, ahead of Wentworth and Westlake Boys. Newcomers Waiheke-Whangaparaoa, lead in the the silver fleet.

Despite a delayed start as weather and starter boxes were sorted, we started the day with the 4th pool position sail off between Napier Boys B and Napier Girls B to decide the final make up of the Gold and Silver Fleets. Napier Boys B managed to hold off Napeir Girls B and claim the last spot in the Gold Fleet, with Napier Girls B completing the Silver Fleet. We managed to finish the first round robin for the Gold/Silver Fleet even though the winds were lighter than on Day 1

Central NIs – Day 1 – Taupo Today the fleet sailed in two pools, Grey & White and we managed to complete the first round, with a mixture of weather and wind strength and a number of course resets! Based on the results of the first round, we will start tomorrow, weather permitting, with a sail off between the 4th place team in each pool. The top three teams from each pool together with the winner from the sailoff will form Gold fleet and the losing team will join the bottom

In the 2017-2020 rules RRS 18.3 has been deleted for starboard roundings. Also Team Racing Call E8 has been withdrawn for review. We have been advised that World Sailing will not be giving any lead on the effect of the change for a year. We need to have umpires and sailors reading form the same page at least before the nationals. The Hawke’s Bay region held the first HB Team Sailing Champs on Sunday 5 th March. Conditions were ideal, 6-8knots of easterly breeze. Three schools provided a total of 3 teams (including one mixed team of Lindisfarne and Napier Boys). Sailing was competitive and close. On the Tuesday the 10 th of January, 22 young sailors took to the waters of Picton Harbour as part of a three day training clinic organised by Marlborough Colleges Sailing Club and lead by Head coach Zac Bromhead.
